An Introduction to Ladakh

God did spend a lot of time to crafting Ladakh so we can rightly called to Ladakh as The “Land of High Passes” & “The Land of Endless Discoveries”

Ladakh is cold desert, barren yet beautiful region lying in the great Himalayas on the Eastern side of Jammu & Kashmir and sandwiched between the Karakoram mountain range in the North and the Zanzkar Mountains in the south enclose it. A vast highland desert at an altitude of 11500 feet. It’s bearing an awesome natural landscape with peaceful, tranquil and enchanting environment. The rugged mountain, desert, rocks and oasis if blended with spiritual world of Ladakh could exhilarate your mind and soul. To any travel fanatic, Ladakh can provide a vast array of location which may vary from high snow-capped mountains to desertic sand dunes or from turquoise blue brackish lakes to unending high altitude planes. Ladakh is composed of the Leh and Kargil district, and Leh is the centre of Buddhist culture. The most attractive feature of landscape of Ladakh are the Buddhist monasteries and historical Fort & Palaces. However, travelling in Majestic Ladakh is quite simple.

Kargil

Kargil is district of Ladakh region in the Indian occupied state of Jammu & Kashmir. It is second largest town in Ladakh after Leh.  It is located 60 km  from Drass  and 204 km Srinagar to the west, and 234 km from Leh to the East. Visiting Drass memorial is a gesture of respect for the immortal souls of Indian army men. It was time to pay homage to the martyrs of kargil war in 1999. Kargil War memorial which is situated along the Srinagar – Leh National Highway in the village Drass 0f Kargil district. We entered into it and walked through the lane “Vijay path” that leads to the memorial. This path got its name from Indian Military operation, “Operation Vijay”. The memorial is mainly built of pink sandstone at “ground Zero” with the backdrop of Tololing range.  The museum in this war memorial exhibits army emblems, model of Himalayan mountain range and documents archive. There is a special war gallery namely captain Manoj kumar that has photographs and weapons. The walls have the name of the soldiers who sacrificed in the war.

Rock-cut sculpture Of Maitreya Buddha at Mulbekh

The archaeologists departments of Jammu & Kashmir found  3 sculptures of Buddha. One sculpture is in Mulbekh village, about 40 km from Kargil headquarters. Another is 20 km from Kargil headquarters while going towards Batalik. The third is on the way to Zanskar River. Travel through Suru valley in Jammu & Kashmir to reach Mulbekh village. There is limestone rock in this zone. The huge rock-cut sculpture of Maitreya is the main centre of attraction of the Mulbekh village. This rock-cut sculpture is 9 m high standing sculpture of Bodhisattva with four arms. This statue has four arms that are carved on a rock. This solitary half -way between Srinagar and Leh. This rock sculpture is a major centre of attraction of the tourists of the entire globe, since time immortal.

Lamayuru Monastery

It is located on the main highway between Bodhkhabru and Kha-la-che at altitude of 3510 meters. There are several legends associated with this Gompas. One such Legends is that Lamayuru was a take that drew back up the mountains after blessings from a Lama, in order to evacuate space for this features a rich collections of wall paintings and Thankas.

Likir Monastery

It is Buddhist monastery in Ladakh, Northern India, located approx. 52 km west of Leh. It is on the top of a hill along -side the valley of river Indus. The monastery is also repository of old manuscript , has a notable thangka collection and old costumes and earthen pots. Sitting on the roof is a 75 feet high glided gold statue of Maitreya Buddha.

Alchi Monastery

It is located in the Alchi village in Leh. Today it is being monitored by Likir monastery. The walls of the site are adorned with paintings depicting the details of Hinu Kings as well as the teaching of Buddhism. There is also a huge Buddha statue in the complex.

 

Magnetic Hill

The “Magnetic hill” is located on the Leh-Kargil-Batalik national highway, about 30km from Leh, at a height of 14,000 feet above sea level. On the eastern side, flows the Sindhu, which originates in Tibet and goes to Pakistan and its bordered by the sindhu river. The hill is alleged to have magnetic properties strong enough to pulls cars uphill and force passing aircraft to increase their altitude in order to escape magnetic interference; in reality, the effect is an optical illusion created by the gravity hill.

 

Sangam sthal

The confluence of the Zanzkar and The Indus river is 3 km southwest of Nimmu village in Ladakh.  The Zanskar river is a north flowing tributary of the Indus. Zankar river rafting in Ladakh is quite unlike anywhere else in the world. It provide the best opportunity to enjoy and experience the natural beauty of the spectacular landscape with deep gorges, towering snow-capped peaks, hilltop monasteries, hill side village and glimpses of the unique wildlife.    

Patahr Sahib Gurudwara

Gurudwara Patahr Sahib is a beautiful Gurudwara constructed in the memory of Gurur Nanak, about 25 miles away from Leh, on the Leh-Kargil road 12000 feet above sea level. Guru Nanak is well respected by Tibetan Buddhist who consider him a saint; The Dalai Lama spiritual leader of Buddhist in Tibet. Today the site and the Gurudwara that now covers boulders is revered by both the local Lamas and Sikh sangat. Currently the army is looking after Gurudwara.

 

Leh Palace

Leh palace was built in the 17th century by king Singe Namgyal as the royal residence. The majestic palace overlooks the Namgyal hill and is nestled amidst breath taking locales of the Himalayas. The main features of this style of architecture are massive buttressed walls and overhanging wooden balconies. The mountain of stok Kandri in the Zanskar mountain range is visible across the Indus valley to the south, with the Ladakh mountain range rising behind the palace to the North. It is hold rich collection of jewellery, ornaments, ceremonial dresses and crowns.

Thiksey Monastery

It is of the yellow Hat sect. It’s around 19 km of the East of the main city of Leh. The architecture of the largest monastery in central region of the Ladakh. This is 12 –storey building complex consist a number of things related to Buddhist art such as Thangka, paintings statues, stupa, swords.The statue of Lord Buddha in this temple of 49 feet high.    

 

Hemis Monastery

Hemis Monastery is the biggest and very richly endowed monastery of Ladakh. It is 45 km towards the south east of the main city of Leh, on the west bank of the Indus River, built on a green hill, surrounded by spectacular mountains scenery is hidden in gorge. Impressive and intriguing, Hemis is different from other important monasteries of Ladakh. The monastery is decorated on all the four sides by the colourful prayer flags which flutter in the breeze and send the prayers to Lord Buddha. The main building has white walls. The entrance to the complex is through a big gate which reaches to a big courtyard. The stones of the walls are decorated and also painted with the religious figures. On the north side there are two assembly halls which are accessed by the stairs. As in most of the monasteries one can also see there the guardian deities and the wheel of Life. It has museum, an important library of Tibetan styles books and a very impressive and valuable collection of Thangkas, gold statues and Stupas, embedded with precious stones and many objects. Hemis festival is most well -known festival of Ladakh, it is dedicated to Lord Padamasabhava. The Hemis festival take place in front of the main door of monastery. A number of musicians play the traditional music with four pairs of cymbals, large-pan drums, small trumpets and large size wind instruments. The most esoteric of festivities are the mystic mask dances. The mask dances of Ladakh are referred collectively as chams performance. The festival of dances, where good triumphs over evil in colourful pageant is also the annual “bazzar” where Ladakhis from remote areas buy and sell wares. During festival time various rituals and mask dances are performed in this courtyard. A stay in Hemis over-night enables you to attend early morning prayers, a moving experience and strongly recommended.

 

Pangong lake

This lake is one of the largest and most beautiful natural brackish lake in the country.This lake is about 2-10 km wide situated at an altitude of 14,270 feet. It’s 140 km long extends from India to China. Just about 160 km from Leh. A drive to this lake will result in one of the most wonderful experience. The journey begins at Thiksey village, which is famous for its huge monasteries covering an entire mountain range. The road crosses the villages of Shey and Gya and traverses the Changla Pass at 17380 feet is the third highest pass of the world.  Pangong Tso Lake was featured in the last scene of the blockbuster movie “3 Idiots” in the year 2010. The first glimpse of the serene, bright blue water & lakeshore remains etched in our memory, When the clouds clear, sun rays play magic with crystal clear and water changes its colour in many shades of blue and green with changing position of the sun in the sky. 

Nubra Valley

It is a tri-armed valley, it is situated in the North of Leh,  between Karakoram and Ladakh ranges of Himalayas. Its lies at average altitude about 10,000 feet above sea level. The road to Nubra runs across Khardung-la pass, 18380 feet , it is the world’s highest motorable  road. Diskit the capital of Nubra is about 150 km North from Leh town. The deep cut Shyok and Nubra river valleys offer tremendous yet accessible scenery with green, oasis villages surrounded by thrillingly stark scree slopes, boulder fields and harsh arid mountains, enjoying camel rides around the place with scant vegetation while admiring the snow –clad mountain peaks. Around the valley there are several ancient Gompas and palaces. The nearby villages are a great way to enjoy the beautiful view of the valley while taking a stroll. It is 32 metres huge statue of Maitreya Budhha is the landmark of the valley and a famous tourist attraction too..

T Somoriri Lake

It is positioned at an altitude of 15,075 feet above the sea level at a distance of 240 km from Leh in south-eastern sector of Ladakh region. It is 7km wide and 19km long this beautiful lake host to a large number of a flora and fauna.  It is like a pearl shaped and and contain large mineral deposits. 

 

 

Khardungla Pass

It is  located in the Ladakh range which is 40 km from Leh.  It is positioned at an altitude of 18,380 feet. And is also known as the “Pass of Lower Castle”. The Place offers amazing picturesque and attractive views of valley. Tibetan prayer flags add numerous colour to the scenic beauty. This pass is used to carry supplies to Siachen Glacier and is of high logistic importance to Indian army. The nearest reachable town to this pass is Leh which is linked to Manali and Srinagar.
