KULLU – MANALI

Manali is situated 40 km away from Kullu valley to the north the national high way leading to Leh. It is nestled in the mountains of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh near the northern end of the Kula valley, at an altitude of 6,726 feet in the Beas river valley. The land scape here is breath taking. One sees well-defined snow-capped peaks, the Beas River with its clear water meanders through the town. On the other side are deodar and Pine trees, tiny fields and fruit orchards. It is a favourite resort for trekkers Lahul, spiti, Kannur, Leh and Zanskar regions in Kashmir valley. A staging point for number of treks and sports such as a white-water rafting. Manali is also on the road to Ladakh via the valley of Lahul and Spiti and the Rohtang pass which is the main attraction near Manali.

Vashist Hot water springs & Temple

Vashist a small village located around 3 km from Manali, across the Beas towards Rohtang pass is  worth a visit. It is renowned for  its hot springs and temples. Natural hot sulphur springs with two separate bathing tanks for gents and ladies are always full of tourists. Modern bath houses, with Turkish-style showers, have the hot water piped into them for the convenience of the visitors who come here to benefit from the medicinal properties. Vashist also boast a pair of pyramidal old stone temples, opposite each other above the main square to dedicated Vashist Muni. There is another Temple of Lord Rama here.

 

 

Hidimba Temple

Manali has any attractions but the chief centre of interest, historically and archeologically, is undoubtedly the Dhoongri temple dedicated to Hidimba Devi, who was a character in Indian Epic Mahabharat fame. The Hidimba Devi temple is built around a cave where Hidimba performed meditation. It has four-tiered Pagoda shaped roof and the doorway is carved with legendary figures and symbols. This temple located amidst wooden forest of Deodar is about 2.5 km from the tourist office. A large festival is held here in the May. About 70 m away from the temple, there is a shrine dedicated to Goddess Hidimba’s son Ghatotkacha, who was born after she married Bhima.

 

Jogini fall

Jogini falls is a waterfall with a stream running down to join the river Beas in the Kullu valley below. It is about 2 km from Vashist temple. Jogini falls are on the Northern edge of boundary. Land on other side of the falls belongs to the village of Goshal. Sacred to the village protective Goddess who is said to reside inside the rushing waters of the beautiful falls. The jogini water falls are basically the sacred bathing place for “joginis” who are believed to be the unwed daughters of Lord Indra. It is on the first tonsure here above the Vashisht village.

Solang Valley

Solang valley is popularly known as snow point; 13 km is a splendid valley between solang village and Beas kund. Solang Valley offers the view of glaciers and snow-capped mountain and peaks. It has fine ski slopes. It is also offers attraction like paragliding, skating, zorbing, snorkelling etc. The mountaineering Institute has installed a ski lift training purpose. The winter skiing festival is organised here. Training in skiing is imparted at this place.

Rohtang Pass

This pass is an altitude of 13,050 feet above sea level, is another adventure tourist where it can be cold even on a summer day. It is high mountain pass on the eastern Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas around 51 km from Manali. It connects the Kullu valley with the Lahul and Spiti valleys of Himachal Pradesh, India. Manali –Leh Highway, a part of NH 21, transverses Rohtang Pass. It offers a panorama and spectacular mountain rising for above the clouds, which is truly breath taking. The pass is open from June to October each year although trekkers can across it earlier. It is a gateway to Lahul  spiti, Pangi and Leh valley just as Zozila pass is a gateway to Ladakh. There are beautiful sight of glaciers, peaks and chandra rivers flows down in the Lahul valley. Slightly to the left are the twin peaks of the Geypan.

 

 

Kothi

Kothi is a pristine village, located at a distance of about 12 km from Manali at an altitude of 7500 feet above sea level which is located at the foothills of Rohtang Pass. Placed at height of about At Kothi is mostly popular for its unmatched natural beauty, tourists visiting this place can enjoy the alluring view of Beas river meandering through the deep gorge. This splendid village offers a magnificent view of snow-capped mountains and glaciers and of the Beas River that flows through a very deep and narrow gorge at this point. It is a beautiful and photographic village where tourist can capture different thrilling views of the deep gorge through which the Beas swiftly runs. This is an amazing place to experience the natural beauty of high altitude mountain. This village is one of the most scenic places to be visited in the renowned hill station of Manali. The majestic locations of Kothi have been featured in many Bollywood movies and a lot of poets, writers and painters have visited this beautiful sight to soak themselves in the magic of nature.

Lama Dugh

The snowy peaks and hill stations of Himachal Pradesh lure tourists from far and wide. This Northern Indian state is known for its breathtaking beauty, vast green valleys, and meandering rivers. The town of Manali, nestled near the northern end of the Kullu Valley, is the jewel of Himachal Pradesh. Just a few kilometers away lies Lamadugh, a charming alpine plateau. Your trek will start at Manu Temple in Old Manali. This historic temple is dedicated to sage Manu, who according to Hindu religion, is the first man on earth and the author of Manusmriti, an ancient Sanskrit text. From the temple, start your trek towards Lamadugh. Carry adequate food, water, and medical supplies so that you reach your destination safe and healthy. Gear up for a steep climb as you cross a thick trail of deodar and pine forests. En route, you will get mesmerizing views of Manali and the upper Kullu valley. You can also spot peaks like Indrasan, Deo Tibba, as well as the Bara Shigri glacier. As you reach Lamadugh, a landscape as beautiful as a painting will welcome you. The lush green plateau is surrounded by snowy peaks. After spending some time soaking in the beauty of Lamadugh, head back to Manali, where you have the option to indulge in various activities as well as sightseeing before heading back home.

 

Bhrigu Lake

Bhrigu Lake is located at an elevation of around 14,200 feet in Kullu district Himachal Pradesh, India. It is located to the east of Rohtang pass and is around 6 km from Gulaba village. It can be reached by trekking either from the Vashist temple, which is famous for its hot water springs, which is close to the town of Manali or Gulaba village. It is named after famous Saint Maharishi Bhrigu. Legend has it that the sage used to meditate nears the lake and hence it has been rendered sacred; the locals believe that due to this the lake never freezes completely. The remarkable thing about this trek is that one can reach an impressive altitude of 14,200 feet and experience snow over just second day of trekking. To add to that the camping grounds at Rola kholi and Pandu Ropa after dream like views to wake up to. Trekking to the lake is appeasing as being at the lake itself. On day 1 forest trails from Gulaba to Rola kholi camping ground take you through precious old villages, inviting apples orchards, clear rivulets and green pasture lands. On day 2 Generous patches of snow lay splayed on the trail from Rola kholi to Bhrigu lake Trekkers are in for a surprise when, out of nowhere, the lake pops up beyond a ridge. An oval water body lies at the foot of a snow-covered hill. It is an amazing nature’s art ! The descent to green fields of Pandu Ropa brings you to an old village in Kullu. Apple orchards accompany you all the way to Vashist where the treks ends and where you can indulge in a hot sulphur bath.

Bijli Mahadev Temple

Bijli Mahadev is one of the sacred temples of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is located at an altitude of about 2,460m in the KulluValley. Bijli Mahadev is one of the ancient temples in India. Located 22 km from Kullu across the Beas river, it can be approached by a rewarding trek of 3 km. A panoramic view of Kullu and Paravati valleys can be seen from the temple. The 60 feet high staff of Bijli Mahadev temple glistens like a silver needle in the sun. In this temple of lightning, it is said that the tall staff attracts the divine blessings in the form of lightning. It is believed that the priest of the temple has to restore the Shiva linga placed inside the temple using butter and sattoo after every lightning as it shatters to pieces with flash of lightning.

 

Prashar Lake

The lake is located at a height of 2730 m above sea level. With deep blue waters, the lake is held sacred to the sage Prashar and he is regarded to have meditated there. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and looking down on the fast flowing river Beas, the lake can be approached via Drang. There is a round, floating island inside the lake, which is a common natural phenomenon found all around the world. It is composed of plant matter in various stages of decomposition, and is held aloft by the oxygen in its plants’ roots. The floating land moves in all directions in the lake. The floating land covers 7% of area of lake whereas water is with 93%.The temple was built in the thirteenth century and legend has it was built by a baby from a single tree. The lake has a floating island in it and it is said to be unclear how deep it is, with a diver not being able to determine its depth. It is believed that Sage Prashar meditated on the banks of this lake, hence it is named as Prashar Lake. Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers, had created the lake. The story says, after the Kurukshetra / Mahabharat war, Pandavas were returning with Lord Kamrunag. When they reached this place, Kamrunag loves the tranquil surroundings and decides to live here forever. So, Bheem (the strongest of the lot) rams his elbow on one of the mountains and creates a big dent in the land. This dent became Prashar Lake. Till now no one has been able to find out the depth of Prashar Lake.
