About Kashmir Great Lakes Trek

The Great Lakes Trek is also called Sonamarg-Vishansar-Naranag Trek is an alpine himalayan high-altitude trek in Kashmir Valley in the Indian state of Jammu-Kashmir. This trek cover captivating seven Lakes, stunning snow-clad mountains and the beautiful valleys of maples, pine etc. in 8 days. This trek to the different heights on different days and will trek to the highest altitude of 13,800 ft. above sea level. Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is an icon of the beauty of the state. KGL trek is hidden jewel of Kashmir. It has scenic alpine and snow covered mountains will walk through paths, green meadows, rocky terrains are there to bound the journey. Trailing through the Maple trees uphill, trekkers can enjoy the crystal clear view of the nearby villages downhill and especially the Sonamarg village. Further the trail climbs back into a river valley which is the beginning of Nichanai. After crossing a tunnel-like Nichnai pass followed up by the miles spreading meadow and the cascading waterfall with the icy cold comes the Vishansar Lake. Then Cover Gadsar, Satsar and then to Gangabal Twin lakes where you will behold the views that it offers. Try your luck in fishing and embrace the time with open arms while you are here. KGL is best done in the months of July/August and early September. All valleys have variety of colors. The yellow, purple, white, pink. The sky, grass rocks and water adding to colors into the valleys. Each Valley has its own colors. Not just the flowers, the sky, the water, the grass and the rocks everything has a different colors as you proceed on each Day. The best time to visit at July to September. These are monsoon months in the rest of India but the other side of Pir Panjal gets much less rain. Nevertheless, the mountains get their summer showers and the flowers bloom into a riot of colors. 

 

Itinerary

Day-1Drive a Srinagar (5200 ft.) to Sonmarg (7800 ft. ); 85 KM, 3 hr

  • Altitude : 5200 ft. to 7800ft.
  • Time taken : 85 km drive from Srinagar airport to Sonmarg approx 3 hours.
  • Night stay at Sonmarg Hotel.

Day-2Sonmarg (7800 ft.) to Nichnai (11500 ft. ); 9KM, 5 hr

  • Altitude : 7800 ft. to 11500 ft.
  • Time taken : 9 km trek; approx 5 hours walk.
  • Trek gradient: Moderate and 3 hours of steep ascent followed by descent for an hour. next 2 hours a gentle ascent to Nichnai.
  • After breakfast trek start from sonmarg to Nachni.
  • First of the trek is 3 km ascent and 2 km descent, through you will see green meadows, maple, pine & Bhoj trees.
  • Trek will desend down & will take you to the snow-covered Shekdur range.
  • Arrival in Nichnail, Check into the campsite, dinner and over night stay in the camp.

Day 3 Nichnai (11,500 ft) to Vishnusar (12,011 ft); 13.5 km, 7 hours

  • Altitude : 11500 ft. to 12011 ft.
  • Time taken : 13.5 km trek; approx 7 hours walk.
  • Trek gradient: Nichnai to Nichnai pass moderate and 1.5 hours of gradual ascent followed by an hour-long climb to the pass. A steep descent from the pass to Vishansir there is a descent.
  • Then next after trekking down towards 4 mountains to the Kishansir Lake.
  • Arrival at Vishansir lake campsite. It is an unique place with an open ground andyou can paly all outdoor games. 
  • Check into the campsite, dinner and over night stay in the camp.

Day 4Acclimatize & plus rest & Explore Vishansir and Kishansir

  • This day is an light one as you acclimatize yourself to the weather and rest at Vishansir.

  • You may visit and explore around area of Kishansir lake, which is 1.5 km away from campsite. 
  • You will find instagram shots here.
  • The lakes are famous for trout fishing. ( Subject to permission for fishing from Sringar )
  • Over night stay in the camp.

 

Day 5 Vishnusar (12,011 ft) to Gadsar (12,200 ft) via Gadsar Pass (13,850 ft); 16 km, 7.5 hours

  • Altitude : 11500 ft. to 12011 ft.
  • Time taken : 16 km trek; approx  8 hours walk.
  • Trek gradient: Trek onwards start ascend towards the Kishansir peak side. Both easy and tough terrains.
  • The trek is fromKishansir lake side to hte top of the ridge. you can see cylindrical thin line traversing through the mountain side.  
  • You can have view of both lakes of Kishansir and Vishansir lakes when you reach at the ridge top (13800 ft.) 
  • Later part of the day, trek towards the Kishansar Lake and finally make it to the Gadsar Pass that is perched at a height of 13,800ft and is the highest point of this trek. you will also have a view of 2 to 3 small lakes like Yamsar and other is unnamed. From the pass, pass through a flowery meadow and some of the pictorial lakes; Yamsar is one of these lakes.
  • From here, continue with the descend and after crossing Iris, reach the Gadsar Lake. A picturesque lake, it is adorned with the stunning beauty of exotic flowers and snow on both sides.
  • Arriving at the lakeside, report to the nearest Army Camp, and complete the formalities of getting permission to pass Gadsar; ID proofs are a must for this.
  • You might also spot the Glacier of Gadsar Lake.
  • After the Gadsar lake, we will reach the campsite.
  • Just a few minutes before our campsite, we will have another army checkpoint and we will have to wait and follow army protocol for 2 to 3 hours. 
  • Check into campaiste near army post Gadsar (12500ft. ) Night stay at campsite.

Day 6Gadsar (12,500 ft) to Satsar (12,0500 ft); 11.3 km, 4.5 hours

  • Altitude : 12200 ft. to 12000 ft.
  • Time taken : 6 km trek; approx 12 hours walk.
  • Trek gradient: It will be moderate for 1.5 hours of steep ascent followed by a level walk.
  • Mid July to mid August, the trail is laden in vibrant flowers.
  • Trek start early towards Satsar lake, which is a group of seven different lakes.
  • Here you will cross another army check post3rd line defence LOC. So here again ID card will be checked again at satsar army check post.
  • Moving on, we see two small lakes which are often mistaken as Satsar Lakes.
  • We will visit the Satsar twin lakes, in the afternoon, which are approx 1.3 hours.
  • Satsar twin lakes are also known as mengen top.
  • Those twin lakes are between the middle of the mountain.
  • Your day will begin with a walk from the army camp towards the stream.
  • Bless yourself for varied terrains from super steep, flat, and even land. Take a short break at Maengandob that is fringed by mountains.
  • Check into the camp near the surreal first lake of Satsar. 
  • overnight stay at camp.

Day 7 Satsar (12,100 ft) to Gangabal (11,651 ft); 9 km, 6 hours

  • Altitude : 11500 ft. to 7450 ft.
  • Time taken :9 km trek; approx 6 hours walk.
  • Trek gradient: Difficult for 30 min. each of gradual ascent & descent followed by steep around 45 min. through rocky path for approx a 1 hour and ascend.
  • Today true test of camper, this is the day when you will have to push your physical and mental limits!
  • The terrain is bouldery and it is more of a boulder hopping exercise than anything else. Trudge through rocks and boulders ridden terrain, pass the last of the Satsar lakes, and start hiking downwards for half an hour. 
  • At the pass, you can enjoy views of the 4 lakes, Mt. Harmukh and its glacier.
  • From the pass we descend till the Gangbal lake and camp at Nandkol lake.
  • We visit the Gangbal Lake, which is one of the largest lakes in the trek; also behold the fascinating views of the twin lakes: Gangabal and Nundkol, which are connected to each other by a picturesque stream and are known for trout-fishing.
  • Trekking for around 20 minutes from Nundkol Lake, you will finally arrive at Gangabal Lake, and by crossing the bridge across the lake.
  • you will arrive at the campsite; dinner, and overnight stay in the camp.

Day 8Gangabal (11,500 ft) to Naranag (7,450 ft);13 km, 6 hours & drive to Srinagar

  • Altitude : 11500 ft. to 7450ft.
  • Time taken : 6 km trek; approx 13 hours walk.
  • Trek gradient: This day trek ascents and descents for 6 km followed by very steep descent all the way down.
  • Today’s trek is a killer on your toes and knees, it is a gradual descent followed by a steep descent. from the Gangabal camp site head down along the stream towards the tree line.
  • The trail is a descent till the last point of the trek – Naranag, so take care of your knees and ankles.
  • The trail will pass through pine tree forests and ramble on grassy land dotted with yellow flowers and pine forest.
  • Descend are reach Naranag, the last leg of your trek. Reach Naranag Village in Ganderbal District. If you wish, you can visit Naranag Temple.
  • After the 70 kms drive, you will reach Srinagar.
     
     

Day 9 Srinagar to Gujarat

  • Wake up with memories of KGL trek.
  • After breakfast departure for Srinagar Airport.
  • Then Reach Gujarat.

  • Cheque/Demand Draft should be drawn in favour of ‘Yuvaa Pragati Adventure Treks and Tours’  
  • Payment against dishonoured cheque shall have to be paid with additional charge of ₹ 200/- per cheque extra and other Bank charges if applicable by Bank.
  • In case of cash deposit to our account ₹50/- shall be charged for each such deposit.
  •  If the balance payment is not made before 30 days, 15% of the Total charges of the camp/tour will be forfeited without any prior intimation and remain will refund by cheque in favour of participant as per detail given while registering.

In case of cancellation,

  • 85% of the Total charges of the camp/tour will be refunded 
  • 30-21 Days Prior Trip Date 70% of the Total charges of the camp/tour will be  refunded
  • 20-11 Days Prior Trip Date 50% of the Total charges of the camp/tour will be    refunded 
  • Less Than 10 Days of  the Trip Date have No Refund 

Only Written Cancellations by post or email will be accepted. Refund should be claimed within month after completion of the camp. Original receipts must be returned to us for refund.
