Roadtrip to Lahaul – Spiti Valley is not just any other road trip but a symbol of victory for every explorer, an epitome of traveling for any traveler and a dream come true for any wanderer. And if you are still wondering when will you be heading to the most treacherous road trip to Lahaul – Spiti Valley, then now is your time!
Before we begin, a cautionary notice – This Lahaul- Spiti Valley road trip is not for feeble hearts. We do not encourage leaving the circuit in between or lowering down the high hearted spirit of fellow travelers.
The haunting beauty of Spiti Valley is tough to be summarised in a few words. But if push comes to shove, it can be called a road trip unlike anything else. The silence of ancient Tibetan monasteries is broken only by the rustling wind and river flowing through the valley beneath. It is in this silence that most travelers discover themselves among other treasures. The mountainous culture, tranquil landscape, and hospitable people among most desolate places will leave a lasting impression on your mind and soul. The breathtaking routes amidst beautiful valleys and the gushing river is a trip unmatchable in its spirit and challenges. The challenge is to go beyond what you ever dreamt of and discover the adventurer in you at these heights, often forgotten in the ruins of everyday city life at sea level.
The SUV will gear up by 8 am to be able to beat the traffic and head out straight on broad highways which will lead us to Chandigarh in no time. As the momentum will build up gradually, our first touch point will be the 3 hours hill drive to Shimla. Wait till you feel the hit of cold breeze at Hindustan Tibet Road which will only add fuel to the excitement of reaching the most awaited Lahaul-Spiti Valley. As we take an overnight halt at the hotel at Shimla, spending time strolling down the ridge in the evening, visiting Mall Road and heading to Lakkar Bazaar to pick those unique wooden souvenirs makes it the perfect beginning of this road trip.
To extract the complete essence of Shimla, we will be touching a few famous landmarks which will add on to your traveling knowledge. Starting Indian Institute of advanced studies, a magnificent piece of architecture which is basking in the glory of its history. To build up this exuberant experience, our next stoppage will be Christ Church and State & Army heritage museums to capture the army’s rich heritage and tales of chivalry. Last but not least, hear the unheard tale of Lord Hanuman whose footprints are still engraved at Jakhu temple. Its time to buckle the seat belts and enjoy the scenic drive passing through Kufri, Fagu & Theog only to reach Narkanda by evening.
The third day is all about embracing nature. Right after checkout, we will move to Sangla town and first visit Kamru fort which is famous for its ancient wooden architecture. The town is renowned for a view of the valley, delicious produce of fruits and nuts, river fishing and camping and so much more. Coupled with the natural beauty of the valley, adventure options are galore. Once we reach our campsite a further up in the valley, unwind and relish the lovely valley surrounding the Bapsa river. Post a buffet lunch & some rest, we drive up to Indo China border village of Chitkul which is ironically the last inhabited place towards the border. The town is famous for its earthy feeling of wooden houses and hospitable people
Wake up to the exciting morning in Sangla for a long scenic drive to reach Nako by noon. Once you reach this small heavenly village, enjoy the spread out lunch, walk around Nako Lake & admire the 11th-century Nako monastery with a Tibetan orientation. With the flashback of the dreamy scenic beauty of Nako in eyes, we will then make a stopover at Gui (Mummy) one of the most astonishing elements at Pin Valley. Be ready to get surprised by the naturally preserved dead body with fair visibility of eyes, teeth, and hair intact. Keeping with the tempo, next visit will be at Chango Gompa where you will get ample opportunities to experience the Tibetan culture and history of the area. We will then rest the adventure at Tabo by checking in by the evening.
An early morning homage will take place at the Tabo monastery to get the cultural essence. And to continue in same spirits, we will visit the beautiful Dhankar Monasteryright after check out. Located at the top cliff of the village, the monastery gives the closer look at the Lamas residing here. The route then takes a detour to the remotest village of Pin valley known as Mud Village for a relaxing lunch. The haunting landscape of this village is also renowned for tales of snow leopard. Having experienced the solitude of mud village, our journey will then commence to Kaza town to take our final stopover of the day by evening.
Spend a day appreciating what Kaza has to offer. The first destination post breakfast will be at Sakya Tangyud monastery where chant with the monks and watch them performing their everyday rituals. Be amazed at the world highest post office at Hikkim, and follow the trend of sending postcards to surprise your loved ones behind. Since we made it to the highest P.O, reaching out to the highest motorable village in Asia is a must which will lead us to Komic. Equally not to be missed is Langza also known as the fossil village. Visit the majestic Ki monastery before ending the day at Kibber village on the outer limits of Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary, which is also India’s only cold desert wildlife sanctuary. Our assemble will then drive up to witness some fascinating landscapes amidst nearby Gette & Tashigang villages which makes a livelihood for 4 homes and a total of 40 villagers. While attaining a certain peace in mind, we will route back and reach Kaza by evening.
In morning we will be riding to Kaza and here you are into the Spiti Valleys. Kaza,
located in the state of Himachal Pradesh is a famous and important town in the Spiti
Valley in Lahaul and Spiti district. Situated on a ridge 11,980 ft above sea level, Kaza is
a very beautiful place to visit. Kaza is overlooked by high mountain ridges on all sides.
The town is entirely surrounded by greenery and is rich in flora and fauna. Kaza Travel
guide is incomplete without a mention of its natural beauty and serene vegetation. The
town is divided in two parts- The old and the new. The old town is located on the outer
edge of the city and the major attraction here is an ancient monastery. Now, you have
your bike and awe-inspiring with its shining colours to be explored rest of the day.
Overnight stay will be at the hotel.
After having breakfast, we will explore the magnificient beauty of Kaza. We will visit the
Key Gompa Monastery and nestled between the mountains in a bowl shaped area in
the Spiti Valley is a small remote village named Langza. This village is situated at an
altitude of 14,500 feet above sea level in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal
Pradesh in northern India. Langza is also considered to be one of the highest villages in
the world with a motorable road. And Komic the world’s highest village with a road.
Hikkim is a village in Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh state in northern
India. It is near to the Kaza location. It is one of the highest year-round inhabited
locations in India, with residences from 4330 to 4400 meters. Overnight stay will be at
hotel.
From Kaza we will ride towards Chandratal here is also a motorable road available till a
parking made 2km before the lake. ‘Chandra Tal’ (meaning the Lake of the Moon), or
Chandra Tal is situated in the Spiti part of the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal
Pradesh. The name of the lake originates from its crescent shape. It is situated at an
altitude of about 4,300 meters (14,100 ft) in the Himalayas. Mountains overlook the lake
on one side, and a magnificent cirque presents a view on the other. Chandra Tal offers
magnificent view at night (after sunset). While temperature drops below Zero degree
Celsius during pre-winter, the sky is filled count-less stars & offers Spectacular Milky
way view. After having dinner we will spend the night at campsite and doze off in the
tents under the dazzling sky.
Early morning after having breakfast, we start riding back toward Manali. On arrival,
check in at hotel and time to say goodbye to your best companion, the bike which has
been your best buddy throughout the entire adventurous trip. This will be the end of
motor biking. Overnight stay will be at the hotel.
Today is a free day to relax and for the restless ones to explore and soak the beauty of
Manali and nearby places one more time! In the evening we will depart for Delhi by
Volvo bus. We will arrive at Delhi around 10 A.M. on next day in the morning and now
you have a bunch of good friends an extra luggage to carry home and that is a bag full
of adventurous fun-filled memories to cherish for lifetime.
Everyone should bring her/his original Photo ID proof, if any case you forgot than you would be liable to pay any of the Indian Railway fines as per Indian Railway rules, if you travel by train.
